MCJ Core Courses (9 credit hours) CRJU 5001 - Criminal Justice Systems, Policy and Practice CRJU 5002 - Criminological Theory CRJU 5007 - Violence MPA Core Courses (15 credit hours) PADM 5001 - Introduction to Public Administration and Public Service Students are expected to complete PADM 5001 within their first two semesters of enrollment. PADM 5002 - Organizational Management and Behavior PADM 5004 - Economics and Public Finance PADM 5005 - The Policy Process and Democracy PADM 5006 - Ethics and Leadership Research Methods (3 credit hours) CRJU 5003 - Research Methods CRJU 5003 should not be taken in the first semester. Elective Courses (21-24 credit hours) Students complete 21-24 credit hours of electives (number of hours depends on the student’s selection of Capstone or Thesis for their culminating experience; students work with their faculty advisor to develop an individualized plan). A minimum of 6 elective credit hours must be in Criminal Justice, with the remaining hours chosen from CRJU and/or PADM elective courses. Electives include a mixture of specialized criminal justice and/or public administration courses, workshops, and other formats. Students may choose to focus these elective hours around a particular area based on their interests and career goals. Where appropriate, students may include specialized courses offered by other UCCS departments, with prior written approval of the program director. Any of the courses included in graduate certificates offered by the College of Public Service may be applied to the MPA degree as electives. Internship / Field Study requirement for pre-service students Students who have not had at least one year of full-time professional experience in a criminal justice or public service organization are required to complete either PADM 6910 Internship or CRJU 6910 Field Study in Criminal Justice, which replaces one elective course. The student’s need for an internship / field study is determined by the MPA and MCJ program directors at the time of admission; each student is notified of this decision in their admission letter. Students for whom an internship is required should work with their advisor to find a placement that satisfies all requirements. A minimum of 240 hours of supervised work is required to earn 3 hours of credit. Students must have completed at least 9 credit hours of coursework to enroll in internship / field study.

The applicant may have majored in any field for the undergraduate degree. Students should have a 3.00 (or better) undergraduate grade point average for admission into the MPA/MCJ program.

Subject Area: The fields of public administration and criminal justice share a close relationship, and students pursuing a career in either field can benefit from a dual degree program that combines the Master of Public Administration (MPA) and the Master of Criminal Justice (MCJ). The MPA degree is designed to equip students with the necessary skills to excel in various roles within public and nonprofit management and policy analysis, while the MCJ program prepares graduates to work in organizations dealing with criminal justice policy.

  • Nonprofit Management Graduate CertificateAdmission to this certificate program requires a bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better. Current UCCS Students Current UCCS students wishing to pursue a graduate certificate in Homeland Security and Emergency Management must submit a Certificate Declaration to cps@uccs.edu. Students in the Master of Public Administration (MPA) or Master of Criminal Justice programs may count graduate certificate coursework completed with a grade of B- or better toward their degree’s elective requirement, allowing certificate completion along with the MPA or MCJ program. Consult with CPS's graduate student services specialist or relevant program director to verify courses fit into your degree plan. New Students New students interested in pursuing a graduate certificate only must complete the online graduate application, select their intended certificate and pay the $60 application fee. An unofficial transcript showing the undergraduate degree conferred should be sent to UCCS Admissions, 1420 Austin Bluffs Pkwy, Colorado Springs, CO 80918, or electronically to ugapp@uccs.edu. An official transcript will be collected by the graduate college prior to the end of the first semester. Certificate Completion Application A Certificate Completion Application is required to be submitted upon completion of the required certificate courses and grades have been posted for the final course. This form is located in the myUCCS student portal. It is the responsibility of the student to notify the College of Public Service when they complete their graduate certificate. Graduate Certificate Students Graduate certificate students may also become interested in enrolling in the Master of Public Administration (MPA) or Master of Criminal Justice (MCJ) program. Up to 12 credit hours of graduate-level School of Public Affairs coursework completed with a grade of B or better as an unclassified (non-degree) student may be applied to the MPA or MCJ upon admission, subject to degree plan requirements and program director approval.
