NGO Education Survey

Introduction

The NGO Education Survey Directory Database provides a comprehensive list of NMPS (nonprofit management and philanthropy sector) programs and courses globally. The current version of the directory database offers detailed information on NMPS programs and courses offered in Africa, the Americas, Europe, and Asia. This database was developed and is maintained by Dr. Roseanne Mirabella.

In 1995, the Kellogg Foundation provided support for a major research project to examine the impact of nonprofit management education programs on the nonprofit community. The project, based on a survey of universities and colleges, sought to answer the following questions: What is the current universe of graduate programs that focus on the management of nonprofit organizations in the United States? Where are they situated in the university--in colleges of arts and sciences, business, public administration, or elsewhere? What courses are offered? What degrees are granted? Do course offerings differ by the type of degree granted? Follow-up studies have been conducted by Mirabella and her colleagues to maintain the most up-to-date information on programs in the U.S. This website contains the most recent data available, with a particular emphasis on the current census of university-based programs. Mirabella has published widely on nonprofit management education in the United States for over twenty-five years:

Once this work on nonprofit education programs in the United States had been well developed, Mirabella, together with her partners Johan Hvenmark and Ola Segnestam Larsson, set out to explore the current universe of international university-based programs in nongovernmental studies around the world, serving as the definitive resource in this area for scholars and students. The NGO Education project is developing a comparative model that will be useful in explaining variations in education programs throughout the world through systematic examination of the literature on comparative nonprofit management, civil society assessment, and cross-national comparative research (Hopkins, CIVICUS, Korten, and Institute of Development Studies). This analysis will include an assessment of the conceptual origin of categories of third sector organizations and the corresponding education models that have been developed to support these organizations. This will include an evaluation of the transferability of education and training models from one setting to another and from one type of organization to another. To date, there have been four special themed issues published in the Journal of Nonprofit Education and Leadership, with many more regions currently being explored:
