Nonprofit Accounting

Credit Bearing: 2
Level: Undergraduate(学部)

The difference between assets and liabilities in an organization may be called equity, net assets, or net worth. There are two types of organizations: for-profit organizations that actively increase the difference and return it to the original contributors in the form of dividends, and nonprofit organizations that try to increase the difference but, in principle, do not return it to the original contributors. In this lecture, we will clarify the accounting of the latter type of nonprofit organization.

Sociology of NPO/NGO

NPO/NGO

Credit Bearing: 2
Level: Undergraduate(学部)

The purpose of this class is to study the concept of non-profit organizations and related public service activities, to deepen understanding of their theory and practice, and to examine the social reality and future vision behind them. The role of non-profit organizations (NPOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as well as government, has been increasing in order to solve various problems that arise in the family, community, and society. Although many NPOs and NGOs are small-scale organizations, they are characterized by their flexibility, their ability to promote citizen-led community development, and their ability to propose new values to the marketplace and ways of working. However, many of them have problems in their ability to communicate and sustain themselves. In this lecture, we will focus on the relationship between government, NPOs, and businesses, and discuss the following topics: "What is needed for government and NPOs to collaborate? What is profit for the nonprofit sector? In addition to assigning time and tasks to discuss specific topics in the classroom, we plan to have dialogues with guests who are working on social issues in Japan and abroad.
