NPO/NGO Theory

NPO・NGO論

Credit Bearing: 2
Level: Undergraduate

NPOs and NGOs are non-profit, non-governmental organizations established by citizens on their own initiative. Today, our society is facing a variety of challenges such as the environment, disasters, poverty, human rights, gender, and depopulation, etc. NPOs and NGOs have developed globally and domestically with the aim of solving these problems that cannot be solved by existing organizations such as governments, international organizations, and corporations alone.
NPOs and NGOs have played the role of collaborating with and complementing the efforts of governments, corporations, and other existing organizations, as well as encouraging reforms in the approaches and actions of existing organizations and in institutional and policy reforms. In order to solve social problems and achieve public interest, it is important to deepen understanding of NPOs and NGOs.
This class will introduce the basic concept and overall image of NPOs and NGOs, and then explain the relationship between NPOs and NGOs and existing organizations and other sectors, and the role of NPOs and NGOs in solving social issues, including examples of their activities (both overseas and in local communities in Japan). The lecture will also introduce examples of NPOs and NGOs' activities (including examples of initiatives in regions overseas and in Japan). Finally, we will examine the future possibilities and challenges for NPOs and NGOs, as well as the possibilities and ideal forms of participation and support for NPOs and NGOs. The class will also incorporate the latest trends in "systems surrounding NPOs and NGOs," "social entrepreneurs," "earthquake reconstruction," "regional development," etc.
Goals
To be able to obtain "1) basic knowledge to understand NPOs and NGOs," "2) applied knowledge to consider solutions to social issues," and "3) knowledge on skills and methods of social participation," and to be able to explain them in one's own words.
