Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have come to play an important role in democratization, economic development, and human rights in both developed and developing countries. Asia is no exception. This lecture will examine the development of NGOs in Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam, their role in civil society, their relationships with government agencies and international aid organizations, and the possibilities and challenges for democracy in Asia.

非政府組織（NGO）は民主化・経済開発・人権などの分野で、先進国においても開発途上国においても重要な役割を演じるようになった。アジアは例外ではない。この講義では、日本、韓国、中国、台湾、フィリピン、タイ、マレーシア、およびベトナムのNGOの発展、市民社会における役割、政府機関および国際援助機関との関係、アジアの民主主義の可能性と課題について考察する。
