Japan has an unmanageable challenge with its declining population, aging society, decreasing working-age population, falling birthrate, and disparities in the economy and education. Under these circumstances, non-profit organizations have the objective and social role of solving social and regional issues, creating systems for citizen participation, and social change. In the international community, we can see a wide variety of NGO activities in areas such as poverty, education, welfare and medical care, immigration, and environmental issues. The purpose of this lecture is to provide students with the knowledge and know-how necessary to establish and operate non-profit organizations that are voluntary, autonomous, self-supporting, and independent, as well as the knowledge and know-how required to promote community welfare.
