Introduction to NPO

NPO入門

Credit Bearing: 2
Level: Undergraduate(学部)

"Since the second half of the 20th century, non-profit organizations (NPOs, private non-profit organizations) and grassroots organizations have been expanding, accompanied by a communications revolution that has shaken the world with organizational change. Particularly since the end of the Cold War, the state, market, and civil society have shifted to a completely new power relationship, in which the role of civil society has increased.

In this class, we will learn about contemporary social issues through NPOs and explore the direction of their solutions. NPOs are neither governments (national or local) nor corporations (for-profit organizations), but rather voluntary organizations of citizens who take on public issues while remaining in the private sector. From this standpoint, they address social issues that cannot be solved by the government or corporations alone, such as welfare, childcare, poverty alleviation, community development, environmental protection, international cooperation, and cultural activities. In addition to complementing the activities of government and business, NPOs play an important role in monitoring power, raising awareness about social issues, and making policy recommendations. In this class, in addition to explaining theories on civil society and NPOs, we will have three opportunities to invite guest lecturers who are active in the field of NPOs to talk about their activities. In addition, in order to cultivate communication skills essential for NPO activities, students will engage in small group discussions on contemporary social issues and measures to address them, and make presentations.

This class is designed so that students will have the opportunity to ask the following questions after the class
 (1) To be able to understand "what NPOs are" while learning from activities in the field, and
 (2) Learn how NPOs can solve social problems through group work and proposal writing, and acquire the ability to make proposals and take action on their own.
 (2) To learn how NPOs solve social problems through group work and proposal writing, and to acquire the ability to make proposals and take action.

The first half of the course (sessions 1-9) will focus on theory, while the second half (sessions 10-15) will focus on practice, including lectures by guest speakers, case studies, and group work.(Translated by DeepL)
