Advanced Research Methods

This is a supervised research experience. The student arranges to work on a research project under the supervision of a faculty member who utilizes specific methodological and/or statistical procedures of interest to the student.

Examination of community development and individual and collective capacity building related to leisure behaviour and services. The analysis includes the role of the consumer in policy development and service provision.

Leisure and Social Policy

Influence of leisure on Canadian social policy; role of government in establishing and administering policies as they pertain to leisure service delivery systems.

Marketing, Consumer Behaviour and Leisure Services

Marketing philosophy, segmentation, and marketing mix issues will be explored in the context of leisure services delivery with special attention given to public and not-for-profit contexts.

PACS 603 Building Civil Society

This course explores operational aspects of civil society organizations such as visionary leadership, goal setting, evaluation, report writing, financial management, applied research skills, and human resource management. Students will also examine codes of conduct and practice, including rules, laws and customary understandings that guide the work of civil society organizations. Students will research contending views of civil society organizations and their complex relationships with government and business, thereby developing a philosophical and ethical framework for evaluating civil society action.

PACS 610 Contemporary Nonviolent Movements

Through comparative case studies, this course examines contemporary nonviolent movements that illustrate pacifist and other nonviolent strategies for advancing social justice and other high-value political goals. Local, national and transnational campaigns that seek to shape the agenda for global change are examined alongside movements of more limited scope and ambition (e.g., national liberation movements, civil rights campaigns, struggles for democracy). Throughout, attention will be given to trends in practice and to debates concerning the effectiveness, ethical significance, and current relevance of nonviolent change methods.

Policy and Planning of Nature-based Recreation and Tourism

Study of the process and techniques employed in the acquisition, development, management and use of recreation resources.

PS 623 Government, Business, and Civil Society

This course aims to help students develop critical analysis skills to assess the resources and interests of each and to understand common tensions among various levels of government, business, and civil society.

Qualitative Research Data Analysis and Interpretation

Examines and applies a variety of techniques used in the analysis of qualitative research data. A range of approaches will be explored in the course of acquiring practical training in qualitative analysis

The Anlaysis and Interpretation of Leisure Research Data

Examines and applies a variety of statistical techniques used in the analysis of leisure research data. Emphasis is placed on the interpretation and implications of empirical research in the field.

The Interplay of Behaviour, Resources, and Policy in Leisure Stu

The study of leisure studies as a multidisciplinary field including an examination of its development, dominant paradigms, and theories.
