Interdisciplinary Seminar: Culture-Sensitive Skills and Techniques for Project Management and Evaluation

The seminar focuses on a theme that may change annually: health, agriculture, knowledge, built environment, capitalist market, civil society, community organisations, the internet, etc. In small groups and under the supervision of group tutors, the students will research a designated area and theme and explore if and which project could be a cultural sensitive answer to the issues raised. The final research results are formally presented to a panel of experts in the (development) field and/or on the project topic.

Culture, Ecology and Development

This course explores theoretical and methodological issues in the study of culture and social activity in relation to ecological systems and the environment. Readings include both classic studies as well as contemporary research, with particular emphasis placed on the various dimensions and scales of social organization and activity, and on the role of cultural, religious and political institutions in shaping ecological relationships as well as economic behaviour.

Development Actors and Paradigms

This course is based on practical experiences and case studies. It will familiarise students with more recent paradigms and methods in the development arena while allowing them to challenge different development theories. A brief theoretical overview is complemented by lectures focusing on donor strategies and funding mechanisms, multi-stakeholder analysis, project cycle management, outcome mapping and case studies about sustainable development, natural resource management, participatory approaches, civil society actors and readings from seminal works on gender and development from anthropological and political science perspectives.

Starting from a critical reflection on the main concepts of development and culture(s), the seminar zooms in on development discourse, the anthropology of development, ethnographies of aid, the world of NGOs, various types of development workers, the Migration-Development nexus and the wider context of development and mobility. The seminar ends by reviewing and discussing various scholarly critiques of development. While some of the reading materials used are theoretical, others include concrete case studies from across the world.
