This course seeks to improve the knowledge of the social economy, to highlight management in social economy enterprises and to proposed tools adapted to sector. Special attention to link between corporate social responsibility and third sector.

The financing of social entreprises, conditions the development of their activities and the achievement of their goals. Generally, social enterprises face the same financing needs that conventional firms. They, however, have to face specific difficulties in access to resources (need for partial non-market resources, difficulty of raising capital, incompatibility of certain modes of financing their purpose). Conversely, they have privileged access to certain sources of funding (public funding, philanthropy, socially responsible investing). By linking the funding arrangements for capital gains generated by individual or collective social enterprise, this course offers students the opportunity to become familiar with major sources of financing of social enterprises while developing their capacity to utilize it.

Introduction to social economy and social entrepreneurship

This course analyses the economic realities which are part of what is more and more frequently called the "third sector", i.e. a sector which is distinct from the traditional private sector and from the public sector. The third sector mainly brings together enterprises belonging to the co-operative movement, mutual organisations and above all activities with an economic relevance carried out by associations (formal non-profit organisations, on the one hand, and informal associations, on the other hand). These realities are often poorly understood from an economic point of view although they represent a significant part of employment in industrialised countries. In a different way but even more importantly, they are also crucial and bear great hopes in developing economies where they are generally rooted in local communities and prove to be crucial in LDCs where the public sector has decreased a lot and the formal private sector is concentrated in profitable industries and areas. In order to apprehend these realities, which are often poorly known and whose importance is usually strongly undervalued, different types of approaches are used complementarily: approaches based on the concept of the social economy, and those based on the notion of "non-profit organizations" (NPOs). Various approaches were forged during last decades to seize and analyze specificities of such organizations. Among these analytical frameworks, the concept of social economy took a particular importance to stress that the major stake is often to make live a true company by putting it at the service of a social mission.

Social Innovation and Organisational Diversity

Social enterprises address social and environmental challenges which are relevant to society. So do public authorities and to a certain extent also businesses, though with different goals and strategies. Hence, in several fields, social enterprises coexist with other types of actors. This course examines the ability of each of these actors to generate social innovation, i.e. to conceive and implement new solutions to social and environmental issues. To understand the logics of each actor, an institutional framework is used, combining economic, sociological and managerial perspectives. A special attention is devoted to the relationships among the different actors, from competition to collaboration.

The "Management of Social Enterprises" option gives management science students the opportunity to acquire skills which are common to all the options of the Masters in Management Sciences, whilst at the same time fostering the development of skills useful in social enterprises and, more broadly, teaching them to consider the social, ethical and environmental aspects at the very heart of economic activity. "Management of Social Enterprises" aims to teach students: * An ability to analyze: analyze and anticipate social stakes, understand the diverse forms of economic organizations, their roles and specificities; * Operational knowledge: know the environment (economic, political, legal) in which social enterprises operate, learn the managerial practices adapted to social enterprises, master the tools adapted to their specificities; * A network of contacts: meet the main actors in the Belgian social economy, make contacts with similar experiments in Europe and the rest of the world; * A stimulating context for launching social entrepreneurship projects.
