HCS516 Community Development (Advanced Specialisation)

The range of communities has expanded far beyond the notion of locality. Community development is therefore a complex and challenging endeavour. This subject expands definitions of community, increases student capacity for analysis, action, response and evaluation of developmental activities in various communities of place and space from village to cyberspace.

HIP302 Understanding Healthy Communities

This subject equips students with skills and knowledge about health promotion, community health and community development. Students will learn about: evaluating community needs and strengths; developing programs to meet identified needs and build on existing strengths; and how programs are planned, implemented and evaluated in a community focused, culturally competent and ethical way. This will be complemented by learning about funding sources, how to write a grant application and how to manage a budget. Leadership skills such as creating a common purpose, bringing people together, community engagement and community capacity building, will be discussed. Knowledge and skills developed in the subject will prepare students for working in community based practice in a variety of health and community settings.

INF460 Community Informatics

This subject will develop information professionals who can ensure that the economic benefits that flow from the use of these networks are distributed in such a way that they do not replicate existing inequalities, but rather add to the social capital that resides within existing communities. This subject will be of interest to those who wish to work in the not-for-profit sector, in public libraries, in community development, in social innovation or social justice settings.

MGT552 Leadership and Social Impact

This subject focuses on the role of leadership and leaders towards achieving social impact level change and outcomes. Examining the tension between an organisation’s purpose and its profit drivers, students will explore questions like: How does our organisation impact society and how should it impact society? Is our growth sustainable and responsive in a changing world? What are strategies for creating positive societal impact? This subject will investigate current challenges in achieving social benefit, and explore the emerging ideas around collective leadership.

MHP214 Primary Health Care: Community Development

This subject examines the principles and practices of community development. It focuses on how to engage and work effectively with communities to build social capital and effective community programs that will assist in improving social and emotional well-being in families and communities. Students are introduced to the important concepts of equity, access, empowerment, community self determination and inter-agency collaboration as well as the social, economic, cultural and political determinants of health.
