This project was initiated in 2003 when Seton Hall University TLTC Faculty Innovation Grant (FIG) was awarded to Drs. Edwin Pak-wah Leung and Dongdong Chen. Using the Practical Chinese Reader Book 1 (Liu et al., 1997) as the material, Dongdong created the interactive Web-based Chinese-learning Program by designing and working with the Idoul Group. Dr. Tianwei Xie and www.ocrat.com contributed individual animated character images.
In 2004, Dongdong received another FIG to upgrade the program by adding the vocabulary of Integrated Chinese (IC) Level I Part 1 (Liu et al., 1997). Mr. Zhao Yifei recorded the new words on cassette tapes, which were later digitized by Alisdair MacRae and Jesse Yeh of TLTC. Also added were 11 videos, created by the students learning Chinese at Seton Hall University. These videos accompanying the 11 chapters of IC were completed in 2006 with the assistance from Heidi Trotta and Karlar Braithwaite of TLTC.
In 2017, Dongdong received the DH Fellowship from Seton Hall University. As a result, she built two versions of Chinese matching games with the guidance and support from Veronica Armour, Thomas A. McGee, and Obed E. Raimundo of TLTC. On the basis of a gaming template created by Dongdong, her students taking Introductory Chinese I & II created 10 sets of matching games, related to the vocabulary of 10 chapters of IC Level 1 Part 1 (third edition).
In 2020, as part of the Seton Hall University and Ramapo College DH initiative, Dongdong experimented with her students in creating podcasts. Consequently, 18 Chinese podcasts were produced by students of Introductory Chinese II in Spring 2021. The work was made possible with the help from Thomas A. McGee and Michael Soupios of TLTC.
In 2021, Thomas A. McGee of TLTC rewrote the Web-based Chinese-learning Program by using PHP to replace the java language. The content has also been upgraded with extra vocabulary added, which was not available in the second edition of IC.
THANK YOU to all mentioned above. Without their efforts and hard work, this project in different phases would not have been completed. The participating students deserve a special thanks! During the process of making the games and podcasts, Drs. Mary Balkun and Marta Deyrup were instrumental in providing huge support.
