Purpose of the group:
Explore the potential uses of virtual worlds for Teaching & Learning
- Existing projects
- Projects that we would like to see developed
- What would we like to see in 2-3 years from now …
Existing Projects
Mary Balkun - House of 7
- Summer 2007; fall 2007; spring 2008
- Saw mostly complete builds that student experienced
- Took a different take - graduate student construct the elements of the space
Jack Shannon - Legal / Business issues of Virtual Worlds
- December 2007 - Jud Jennings & Lenny Nuara from SHU Law
- 2nd & 3rd year law students in 'cyber law' course & graduate and undergraduate business students
- Business students formed plans to launch SL Businesses - consulted with the Law groups for business & SL Business advice
- Will run this again in the Spring 2009 - will involve the Entrepreneur students with the goal of setting up and running a business in SL
- Sue Sherrick runs the entrepreneur center - recommendation from Jack to her is that we will start a business in SL as an ongoing Sr. Seminar project…
Annie Hewitt and Susan Spencer - SWW Disaster Prep
- Seton World Wide - mid-program residency
- Play2Train environment - restaurant explosion, multiple casualties
- Communication planning exercise
- The scenario has run twice
- BIGGEST ISSUE - students home computers just don't support SL - video cards and Internet connection speed are the issues…
- Pandemic flu as a potential 2nd disaster…
- New curriculum September 2009 - new course in Emergency Preparedness
Future Projects:
- We do have a Second Life Island, located on the NMC Campus
- Martha Schoene & Marion Glenn are developing a Marsh Environment for our island, to be located next to the House of 7
- The House of 7 is currently located on our island
- Development of a 'Welcome Area' for visitors
There are some technical constraints that need to be considered when building an island in Second Life:
- There are a limited number of prims (primitive objects - the base construction of all elements in Second Life) that can be placed on one island.
- Students at a distance have had significant issues running Second Life - specifically, graphics cards on older computers were not able to render the environments compounded with slower Internet connections.
Long Term:
How do we market what we have already done to other faculty at SHU or in higher education...
The group discussed the benefits and limitations of having the SHU SL Island on the NMC Campus
- private island limits the potential for 'griefers' to cause problems
- private island can be difficult to find - implications for collaboration with other institutions
- some projects will not be able to be implemented - can't start a business in an area with no traffic ...
To scale up for potential future use, it is possible to get an Island separate from NMC. This would involve giving up some of the resources and support that we currently get from the NMC.
What do we want our Second Life presence to be? One faculty commented that when exploring other Universities SL locations, it felt like walking down main street on Universal Studio's - great facades with no content. SHU's SL location has content galore!!!
Discussion continued on two main points:
- behavioral expectations for our students in SL related to class activities / expectations for any avatar on the SHU Island
- increasing exposure of our Second Life activities and increasing faculty interest in exploring virtual worlds
Ideas for increasing our activity in Second Life:
- Hosting an American Gothic conference in SL.
- TLT Roundtable events - simulcast RealLife in Second Life
Thinking Strategically:
Thinking Strategically about our Second Life presence, our next steps are -
- Developing Goals / Objectives
- Investigating our existing relationship with IBM, who has a large investment in SL, how can we get funds from them?
- Investigating funding from the McArthur Foundation and other organizations for grants related to New Media
- Investigate the potential for community building with SL (implications for SetonWorldWide)
- We need to 'mainstream' Second Life
