The TLT Center has a limited number of Nokia smartphones to support projects designed to utilize mobile technology. These devices allow users to create, share and consume media, collect and process data, communicate with peers, faculty and administrators as well as access the web to conduct research and retrieve information.

Proposals are now being accepted for the use of these devices for special projects designed to support student learning, engagement and community. Proposals are due by Tuesday, December 22, 2009. On Wednesday, November 11, 2009, the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Roundtable held its first event of the academic year: Mobility Project Best Practices. The use of Nokia mobile devices has been piloted by faculty and administration for the last year in their courses or their departments. This fall semester, 16 projects were launched with about 450 devices!

Presentations at this event were conducted by faculty, students and administration to share with the SHU community the exciting work that is being done on and off campus with mobile devices.

Paul Fisher, Director of the TLT Center kicked off the event describing Seton Hall's initiative, SHUmobile, with his presentation The Evolution of the Mobile Campus.

Next on the agenda was Hezal Patel, Freshman Studies Mentor and Mary Zedeck, Instructional Designer. This project involves the University Life course and the use of mobile devices to create multimedia artifacts for student ePortfolios as well as the investigation of platforms for ePortfolio creation. Two Nokia device models spanning two semesters, the N95 and the N97, have been incorporated in three transfer sections of the University Life course. The third presentation was conducted by Karoline Stankiewicz, William Petrick and Jas Verem of Housing and Residence Life who are using Nokia 97s in a variety of ways to enhance the living and learning communities at SHU. Their presentation highlights the exciting ideas from HRL in how they are creating an online community for distribution and sharing of resources and experiences.

The last presentation was given by Dr. Michael Taylor, Assistant Professor of Political Science and Environmental Studies and two of his students, Brittany Tumminia and Jacie Jones. Dr. Taylor has been using Nokia mobile devices since the beginning of the SHUmobile initiative and has incorporated all three models that are currently on campus, Nokia e71, N95 and N97, in his courses. Brittany showed a location and place digital story that she created in Introduction to Environmental Studies and Jacie showed a mini-documentary that she developed in Introduction to Public Policy. Dr. Taylor discussed the two assignments above, general use of mobile devices in higher education and Seton Hall's newly formed Center for Mobile Research and Social Change.

The Nokia N97 received an update a few weeks ago, and many of the users here on campus have been working with the new release.

Here are some of the highlights:

New features :

1. Nokia start-up screen has been enhanced with a "Connecting People" slogan below the Nokia logo (May not be found in All Versions).


2. The phone has lesser memory after start-up but it seems to utilise the memory very well and very little lags and crashes are present.


3. The dial-pad on the home-screen now has letters embedded too.


4. "Kinetic Scrolling" EVERYWHERE throughout the phone interface including applications.


5. Updated web browser from (v7.1.13841) -> (v7.1.17475).


6. The "long press for symbol" function of the keyboard has already been revealed and it works as advertised.


7. Updated version of Nokia N97 Pre-installed Applications (Ovi Maps, QuickOffice, Youtube...etc).


8. Whole NEW Applications like (Ovi Contacts).


9. A little bit more Reliable & Speed in opening Multiple Applications.


10. At Contacts > Profile you will see a new option there called 'Edit active profile'.


11. No longer Randomly switches back to "Nokia Tune".

Here are some tips and tricks for setting up email on the Nokia E-71 and N-97 mobile devices.

1. When setting up your first.last@student.shu.edu email, the password required is the one that was created when activating your Live@edu account. This may not be the same as your http://piratenet.shu.edu password.

2. The email application on the Nokia devices may need to have the Access Point set from the default to either Shu Campus, Shu wifi, or Internet.
   To set the Access Point for your first.last@student.shu.edu email:
   • E-71: select Menu, Mfe, Mail for Exc..., Options, Edit Profile, Connection, then Access Point
   • N-97: select Menu, Applications, Mfe, Mail for Exc..., Options, Edit Profile, Connection, then Access Point

SHUmobile Project Background and History

Seton Hall University is committed to providing a unique and advanced technological environment for students, faculty, administrators and all community members. Recognizing that the evolution of mobile technology will enable more opportunities for collaboration, community building and communication, the SHUmobile initiative will extend the pillars of our successful Mobile Computing Program of access, support and curricular integration for these emerging devices.

To realize this vision the Department of Information Technology has worked with the South Orange faculty to identify appropriate projects in several disciplines that will deepen student learning and provide for innovation in teaching, learning and provide experience with mobile technology used in the field by professionals.

Below is a list of SHUmobile projects currently underway or about to get started!

College of Arts & Sciences, ENVL 3050 JA - Water Quality Monitoring and Policy
Michael Taylor is conducting an Independent Study, this summer, using the E71 for:

• Water quality monitoring along East and West Branch of Rahway River
• NDG for data collection
• Geotagging, route creation, and mapping of sample sites
• Creation of mobile video tutorials for water sampling protocols
• Maps and videos will be connected using an online service to create mobile walking tours of water quality routes

College of Arts & Sciences - POLS/ENVL2910 AA and BB Research Methods
The goal of the three fall semester Environmental Sciences courses taught by Michael Taylor is to use the Nokia N97 devices for political science data collection (polling, demographics, social trends, etc.). 

College of Arts & Sciences, New Course - Small Device Programming
Bert Wachsmuth will develop a new course offered to undergraduate students to gain experience in programming for mobile devices.  The course will use the Nokia N97, Apple iPod Touch and Google Android devices and will be offered in the spring 2010 semester.

College of Arts & Sciences, Public Sector Leadership
Matt Hale will use the Nokia N97 device in his Public Sector Leadership course during the fall semester to have student create a video essay on their neighborhood and document the needed improvements.  Pairing this technology with Google SketchUp will allow the students to also create those improvements in a virtual format and compare the documented issues to the proposed changes.

College of Arts & Sciences, Chemistry Courses
John Sowa has indicated that student documentation while completing Chemistry labs have been a problem due to the limited workspace on the lab table.  The use of either paper or the students' laptop computers has been a problem because of the proximity of water, fire and chemicals.  The use of these small devices will allow student to document their findings in a more comprehensive and more efficient manner.

College of Arts & Sciences, ENGL1201 College English I

The goal of this project led by Melinda Papaccio is to use the Nokia N97 device to create digital stories as part of their coursework requirement to submit as a final project.  Students involved in this project in the fall semester will use the Nokia N97 multimedia device to capture their digital artifacts (graphics, videos, interviews, story narration, etc.).  The mobile devices will allow the digital stories to be more genuine and personal in nature than they had been in the past, boost the overall quality of the finished products and expose approximately 60 students in the three English 1201 classes to emerging technology in academia.

College of Arts & Sciences, ANTH 2228 Global Problems and the Politics of Human Conflict/IDIS 1502 Peoples & Culture of America II

The goal of this project led by Cheree Quizon is to use the Nokia N97 device to capture objects as part of the Treasure Hunt: Global to Local assignment in the ANTH 2228 Global Problems and the Politics of Human Conflict/IDIS 1502 Peoples & Culture of America II course during the spring 2010 semester.  The objective of this exercise is to have the approximately 20 students in the class personally experience the search for an object that has traveled from a faraway place, sometimes halfway around the world, an object that can now be located somewhere in the NY/NJ area. 

School of Business, The Center for Leadership Development

The goal of this project led by Jack Shannon and Mike Reuter is to introduce the multiple media and technology available to members of the Seton Hall University community to the incoming group of approximately 15 Freshman Leadership Students. This foundation in the appropriate use of technology for collaboration will serve the incoming students for their degree program at Seton Hall.

College of Education and Human Services, EDST 6305 Production of Instructional Resources II
The students in Joseph Martinelli's summer course will be assigned a project that requires the capture of digital artifacts, both audio and video, on their own outside of scheduled class hours using the Nokia N95 multimedia device. Captured artifacts will be used in a student designed technology rich lesson, which will be presented to the class via Smartboard.  The lesson must be designed for interactivity using the Notebook 10 software, which will be available both in the lab and to the students for download from SMART Technologies. Students will be taught how to manipulate, and enhance digital images captured via the Nokia N95 using MS Expression Design software. Class size is limited to 20 Graduate students. 

Learning Objectives

• Utilize and implement design principles which specify optimal conditions for learning and Identify learning theories from which each model is derived and the consequent implications.
• Categorize objectives using an appropriate schema or taxonomy, while producing
  instructional materials utilizing multimedia tools.
• Select appropriate media (audio, video, digital still) to produce effective learning environments using technology resources (SmartPhone, Smartboard, Office 2007 Applications) and use the appropriate analog and digital productivity tools to develop instructional and professional products.
• Apply instructional design principles to select appropriate technological tools for the development of instructional and professional products.
• Apply appropriate evaluation strategies and techniques for assessing effectiveness of instructional and professional products.  Student will be required to create an assessment to accompany completed task.
• Use presentation application software, such as PowerPoint 2007, PhotoStory 3, or Windows Movie Maker, to produce presentations and supplementary materials for instructional and professional purposes and produce instructional and professional products with integrated applications.
• Apply principles of visual and media literacy and apply development techniques for the scriptwriting, development and production of instructional and professional materials, products and audio/video technologies.
• Use appropriate computer equipment (Desktops, Laptops) and a variety of projection devices (Smartboard) and technology tools (Smartphone) to prepare effective instructional and professional products while facilitating presentations and instructions.
• Design and produce instructional materials (technology rich lessons) and digital information which use computer-based technologies.
• Use imaging devices (Smartphone) to produce computer based instructional Materials, and authoring tools to create effective multimedia instructional materials or products.

Learning Outcomes

• Students will develop a greater understanding as to effectively create technology rich lessons or presentations.
• Students will acquire a competent comfort level with the software applications and multimedia tools being modeled and used in the course.
• Students will gain valuable insight into the usage of Smartboard technology as an educational tool.
• Instructor will improve his own professional course development of the use of multimedia tools in the higher education environment.

Assessment Plan

A detailed rubric will be used to assess the students completed project.  A survey will issued to gather reflective data from the students' feelings regarding the use of the N95 Nokia multimedia phone, and the project in general.  This survey will be created using SHU's Asset Survey Tool and will be required by all students to complete prior to receiving their course grade.

College of Education and Human Services, Student Surveys
This project is to explore a variety of applications for the Nokia N95 multimedia device in the College of Education. These will include, but not limited to: integration in various course settings to determine new uses for the phone to expand teaching and learning possibilities; documentation of NCATE activities for presentation when the NCATE Accreditation Team visits the College of Education and Human Services in fall, 2009; and experimentation with the phone to determine whether it can document and support faculty research activities and assist faculty to interface with research partners.

The audience consists of current and future K-12 teachers, instructional technology coordinators, and school library media specialists who will pass on these newly learned skills to the own students. In particular, the use of the phone in our new graduate special education program scheduled to begin in the spring 2010 semester or summer 2010 semester.

The assessment plan is to develop a survey study that allows users to express their feelings and opinions about using the N95 Nokia multimedia phone. The study will be described in a paper and conference presentation which will detail the outcomes of experimenting with the N95 Nokia multimedia phone.

Learning Objectives

• Integration of the N95 Nokia multimedia device in various course settings to determine new uses for the phone to expand teaching and learning possibilities;
• Documentation of NCATE activities for presentation when the NCATE Accreditation Team visits the College of Education and Human Services in fall, 2009;

Vivienne Carr anticipates using the Nokia N95 device in her course during the fall semester.  A formal proposal has not yet been submitted.

College of Education and Human Services - Production of Instructional Resources I

College of Education and Human Services, Field Evaluators
The goal of this project is to assign Nokia N97s to four faculty members that conduct evaluations on the student teachers in the field.  The project will be coordinated by Grace May and Debbie Strazza and will utilize the NDG tool to pilot the collection of this data electronically.

Freshman Studies - University Life ePortfolio
The goal of the project is to assign the Nokia N97 to approximately 40 students in courses taught by Hezal Patel for assignments that will utilize the devices to create multimedia pieces for their ePortfolios.  Students in these sections will also utilize different technology to produce their ePortfolios.

Freshman Studies - Peer Advisors for StoryCorps Project
The goal of the project led by Liz Hoehn is for Peer Advisors and Mentors to utilize the Nokia N97 to record freshman reflections on their experiences and conduct interviews to participate in the national StoryCorps Project.  Students will include these audio/video clips in the freshman ePortfolio and a local StoryCorps website will be created as a part of the Freshman Experience. 

The devices will be distributed to 16 Mentors, 47 students, and one Graduate Assistant.

School of Health and Medical Sciences, Research Project - Gait and Sports in Adolescents
The goal of this project led by Doreen Stiskal, Chair, Department of Physical Therapy, is to use the mobile devices to record data for a research project involving gait and sports in adolescents. The mobile devices will be used to collect data through information gathering and video capturing on-site at athletic events. A team of graduate students will be assisting in the data collection and analysis process.  The anticipated launch is Fall 2009 or Spring 2010.

School of Health and Medical Sciences, Clinical Students

The goal of this project is to provide the approximately 40 clinical students a mobile device to record procedures practiced and Prescription and diagnosis reference.  Several software packages used to accomplish the goals of this project in industry and at other institutions of higher education exist for other devices/operating systems.  To date we have not found a Symbian or web based product that replicates the functionality and meets the needs.  We recommend a small pilot of another device (e.g. Windows Mobile, Palm or iTouch).

College of Art & Sciences, Introduction to Public Policy
Students in Michael Taylor's Introduction to Public Policy course integrated the use of the Nokia N95 mobile device in their 2009 spring semester course. Students were required to blog and vlog on public policy issues using the course blog. Students used the Nokia N95s to record their own video commentaries that were uploaded directly to the blog from the device. Students also wrote a term paper that analyzed a public policy issue of their choice. The mobile devices were used to conduct interviews with individuals who are affected by that public policy. Students then used Adobe Premiere Elements to cut the interviews into mini-documentaries.

Dr. Taylor plans to repeat this project in future iterations of this course.

College of Art & Sciences, PSMA7121 Public Sector Leadership
Students in Matthew Hale's Public Sector Leadership graduate course used the Nokia N95 device in their 2009 May intercession class. The primary goal of the course was to provide students with hands-on leadership training needed to effectively manage community collaboratives.

Each class session covered a different leadership theory (i.e. Leader-Member Exchange, Style Theory, Traits Theory) along with participatory learning scenarios similar to those based on the television show "The Apprentice". Students were split into different teams with one student assigned to be the project manager for a particular task. Using the multimedia mobile device, students recorded these group activities. Later, the faculty and students will view the videos to analyze and reflect on group dynamics, leadership skills, communication styles and decision making. In addition, a 5-7 minute composite video was created from clips students found particularly interesting, thought provoking or informational.

The seven students who participated in the class were sent an Asset survey. Results will be analyzed next month.

School of Business, Leadership Development Program
Jack Shannon (Legal Studies) and Mike Reuter (Leadership Development) ran a year long course this past academic year "Ideas and Trends" that utilized the Nokia E71 in the course. Over the course of an academic year, senior students in the Leadership Development Program at Seton Hall University were given the goal of producing a course, Ideas & Trends, to be offered to future generations of Leadership Development students beginning in the 2010 spring semester.

As project leaders, the students were required to plan, design and develop the framework, materials, technology, tools, methodologies, assessments and research capabilities that will develop that will enable them to identify and asses s the implications of emerging ideas and trends. The development of the necessary skill sets that will enable leaders to better support the businesses and the communities they serve.

College of Education and Human Services, Computer Fundamentals - Microcomputing
Students in Vivienne Carr's Computer Fundamentals - Microcomputing course used the Nokia N95 device to create a digital narrative about their professional aspirations and inspirations that can later be incorporated into a portfolio piece. The course provides a comprehensive introduction to information technology that includes software implementation, project planning, problem solving, growth and change through the use of technology and the impact of computers in our lives. Topics include a wide variety of subjects including the basic windows operating environment, word processing, desktop publishing and technology tools for presentations.

Freshman Studies - University Life ePortfolio
Students in Hazel Patel's 2009 spring semester class used the Nokia N95s to add graphics and video to their ePortfolios. Traditional ePortfolio assignments for the University Life course have been enhanced to include digital photos, video, audio and interviews conducted by the students. Private Wordpress blogs were used to host the ePortfolios in an effort to allow students to use the mobile application Wavelog to upload information directly to their ePortfolios from their mobile devices.

Assessment of this project was implemented during the course evaluation and results are currently being compiled. Professor Patel has expressed that she would like to repeat the project again in the Fall with her University Life courses.
